We have acquired this Selection 9 variety (SL-9) micro-lot is its entirety. The SL-9 cultivar descends from an Ethiopian arabica variety called Tafarikela. SL-9 is a little known Coffea arabica variety as it is not commonly cultivated outside of India. It is known for its remarkable cup qualities and has won the highest awards among Indian coffees. This micro-lot comprises ten bags which translates to approximately 1,320 pounds of roasted coffee.

This perfectly balanced cup is basked in classic Indian character. It is grown in the Western Ghat mountains by the Shankar family who owns and has cared for this land for generations. Their complex approach to poly-culture farming includes providing a dense shade canopy of silver oak, jack fruit and fig with companion planting in the understory of vanilla, cardamom, and pepper vines. The orchard is home to a broad diversity of fauna including Jungle Pigeon, owl, deer, fox and wild boar. The farm dates back to 1865 when it was first established by the British. In 1950, the farm changed hands to the Shankar family and, in turn, has undergone several changes regarding the coffee varieties planted there. The S-795 variety is now the primary cultivar. SL-9 is one of several varieties that the Shankar family has been experimenting with over the years. This coffee has been shade grown in a polyculture forest farm environment and has been cultivated without the use of pesticides, herbicides or synthetic fertilizers.

This coffee shines as drip, in the press and as espresso. For further details or suggestions for preparation check out our Tips.
