Zippy aroma with plump, juicy purple fruit flavors transitioning into floral rose and spicy acacia. A very sweet and generous cup. Great brewed as drip or in the press pot.
Damian Benavente’s great great grandfather, Don Jose Damian Benavente, started Finca Las Camelias with his brothers in 1890. Today the farm is operated by the fifth generation of the Benavente family. Their coffee processing is realized through a traditional handcrafted washed process and their farming methodology is guided by ecologically minded, shade grown polyculture. The success of their efforts has not only given rise to an extraordinary coffee. Their infrastructure has helped to build a strong and vibrant community high up in the mountains now known as the village of Panibaj. This is our second year offering Damian’s Las Camelias.
Chimaltengo is a lesser known coffee growing region largely because of its geographic isolation. The high altitude volcanic soil and the prevailing Pacific Ocean winds make for ideal Coffea arabica cultivation. As the crow flies, the farm is northwest of Antigua by about fifteen miles. Actually getting there is another story all together.
This year we are also offering the Las Camelias alongside another favorite of ours from Guatemala, the Los Cedros , as our Guatemala Tasting Pair for $34. Both are washed coffees comprised of very similar varietals, but the differences in terroir, altitude and hand of the producer render two coffees which warrant pleasurable and contemplative comparison.
After repose, we seal this coffee in Grain-Pro barrier packaging and then send on its way to our Roastery where we preserve the green coffee under hermetic seal until it is roasted as part of our Barrington Green Seal Program© .
