We received a 93 point score for our Sa’dah Kulani from Coffee Review in August of 2021!
Wild strawberry, lemon, watermelon, raspberry and blueberry with delicate herbal and resinous tones of moroccan mint, spruce, lavender and savory-sweet malt, toffee, caramel, vanilla, chocolate and honey. Reminiscent of Neapolitan ice cream. This coffee is as deep as it is graceful. A stellar example of a traditional, natural processed Yemeni coffee.
The Khulani Coffee Society for Agricultural Development (KCSAD) is comprised of 109 producer members who cultivate on plateaus and stone terraces constructed on steeply sloping terrain at some of the highest altitudes where coffee can survive. The environment in Sa’dah is also intensely arid. These factors make for a very low yield and an incredibly concentrated cup.
Although all Coffea arabica seed stock hails from landrace varieties that originated in Ethiopia, Yemen is the first territory in the history of the World to cultivate coffee commercially. Due to many years of civil unrest and an intensely challenging trade environment, Yemeni coffee remains very rare in spite of the fact that over one million Yemeni’s make their living in coffee cultivation.
The Sa’dah Kulani would not be possible without the lifelong commitment of exporter Fatoum Muslot who works to preserve the health and well being of traditional Yemeni coffee production. Her perspective about her work amidst ongoing civil war in Yemen is both refreshing and inspiring: “With regard to the coffee trade, we cannot stop our activity for many reasons, the most important of which is that we are dealing with a large number of families working with us in the field of coffee cultivation and trading who do not have any kind of agricultural activities other than coffee. Therefore, we have a great and humanitarian responsibility towards these producing and working groups in the field of coffee.” You can read a full interview with her here.
After repose, this coffee is sealed in Grain-Pro barrier packaging in Yemen and then sent it on its way to our Roastery where we preserve the green coffee under hermetic seal until it is roasted as part of our Barrington Green Seal Program©.
As a part of our Rare & Exotic offerings, the Sa’dah Khulani is roasted and shipped on Wednesday of each week. Please place orders by 9am.
