The Mandiri is grown by the 1,218 members of the cooperative Gayo Mandiri Cooperative founded in 2008. The Cooperative is located in Bener Meriah regency in the northern portion of the Gayo Highlands in the Aceh Province of Sumatra. Producer members farms average approximately 2.5 acres, and are autonomous regarding milling, processing and drying coffee. Once dried, their harvests are aggregated and sorted at the Cooperative where final sorting is undertaken and coffee is held in repose prior to export.
The wet-hulled process was developed in Indonesia as a way to protect freshly picked coffee from the particularly humid Indonesian climate. The cherry is first fermented overnight and then stripped from the hull. After before being stripped, the parchment covered seeds are patio dried until they reach approximately 25% moisture content. They are then hulled and the still swollen seeds are solar dried to finish. During this process, the seeds are exposed to to a broad variety of temperatures and environmental exposure which further accentuate the unique Indonesian character.
The heavy body of this coffee makes it particularly versatile for a variety of brewing and serving methods. Although we enjoy it served black, even at our light roast treatment the Mandiri is a great choice for those who drink their coffee with milks or creams.
This coffee is a part of our Origin Certified(TM) Program (link). The Mandiri has been certified at origin by Control Union Certifications B.V. as having been produced without the use of pesticides, herbicides or synthetic fertilizers.
After repose, this coffee is sealed in Grain-Pro barrier packaging at origin and then sent on its way to our Roastery where we preserve the green coffee under hermetic seal until it is roasted as part of our Barrington Green Seal Program© .
