The Vienna is super versatile and drinks beautifully using a variety of methods, either black or with milk. The name “Vienna” nods to the medium roast precedent established by the great cafes in Vienna, Austria.

This coffee is produced by the amazing members of the COMSA Coffee Cooperative in and around the municipality of Marcala, Honduras. The holistic cultivation methods employed at COMSA have also enormously helped preserve their coffee in the harsh light of the coffee leaf rust, or roya, epidemic which has devastated coffee crops throughout Central America over the years.

COMSA members refer to their commitment to soil health as respecting “The Five M’s”. The Five M’s include:

Material- organic manure and compost

Microorganisms- fungi, bacteria and microscopic organisms

Minerals- volcanic rock and sand

Molecules- enzymes, proteins and microflora

Matter- grey matter, to be exact, the power of mindfulness!

Their cooperative not only has a long tradition of sustainable agricultural production including certifications from nearly every third-party organization, but they are also generous educators in sustainable coffee production. Their cooperative members have helped numerous producers in other origins to lay the groundwork for their own sustainable coffee production.

The Vienna represents the many cultivated arabica varieties produced by the 1,500 grower members in the Cooperative. These varieties include Caturra, Bourbon, Typica, Pacas and Catuai.

We have worked with COMSA Cooperative for over fifteen years. During this time we also had the opportunity to celebrate extraordinary coffees from individual members within the  Cooperative. Coffees produced by Seydi Argueta, Juan Cristóbal Cruz, and Esther Chavez have also been in our spotlight.

The Vienna is also available as part of our Medium Roast Sampler.

As part of The Barrington Coffee Origin Certified™ Program our Vienna has been certified at origin by Mayacert S.A. as having been produced without the use of pesticides, herbicides or synthetic fertilizers. The Vienna has also been certified fair trade by Fair Trade USA.
